WASHINGTON, D.C.—Lisa A. Rickard, president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR), made the following statement today about the settlement of a RICO lawsuit against several asbestos attorneys and a radiologist by CSX Transportation for fabricating and litigating fraudulent asbestos claims against the company.
“We commend CSX Transportation for pushing back against the endemic fraud and abuse in asbestos litigation.
“Fraud and abuse in the asbestos compensation system drain the funds available to deserving claimants and force solvent companies, as well as their shareholders and employees, to pay fraudulent claims. This settlement illuminates a path for unjustly-targeted companies to fight back.”
ILR seeks to promote civil justice reform through legislative, political, judicial, and educational activities at the national, state, and local levels.
