WASHINGTON, D.C.—Lisa A. Rickard, president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform (ILR), made the following statement today about West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin signing into law SB 421 to protect against run-away jury awards:

“West Virginia has made historic strides this year in legal reforms that will benefit all of its citizens. Guarding against run-away jury awards will discourage abusive lawsuits and help to brighten the state’s economic future.

“The House and Senate leadership’s commitment to making legal reform a top priority this year serves as an example for other states to follow. The benefits of these laws will be felt for decades to come, and we applaud the governor for signing them into law.” 

ILR seeks to promote civil justice reform through legislative, political, judicial, and educational activities at the national, state, and local levels.
