U.S. House Passes Medical Liability Reform Bill

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protecting Access to Care Act of 2017 (H.R. 1215) by a vote of 218-210. This marks a substantial step toward fixing America’s broken medical liability system.

The Protecting Access to Care Act would reduce excessive costs incurred by litigating baseless lawsuits and practicing defensive medicine that affect all Americans and cost the federal government billions of dollars in health expenditures.

When excessive costs force hospitals to close or curb services, patients must travel farther for – or in some instances forego – needed care. As healthcare costs increase, employers must also limit wage growth and hiring.

We applaud the House for passing this important legislation, and urge the U.S. Senate to swiftly do the same.

Leading up to today’s vote, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform sent a letter to House members in support of the Protecting Access to Care Act.
