U.S. Chamber Urges Gov. Greitens to Sign Legal Reform Bill to Continue Improving Missouri Lawsuit Climate

Yesterday, the Missouri General Assembly passed a bill (S.B. 31) to ensure that courts and juries consider accurate damages calculations. The bill now heads to Governor Eric Greitens for his signature.

Currently, juries are often blindfolded from learning that a plaintiff already received full or substantial compensation for the very injury at issue in the lawsuit from other sources before he or she sued.

S.B. 31 would solve this problem by allowing the court to deduct compensation the plaintiff already has received for an injury after a verdict or allowing the jury to consider such evidence in reaching its award.

We urge Governor Greitens to sign S.B. 31 to continue making important strides to improve Missouri’s lawsuit environment for businesses.
