Rickard: Litigation Financiers ‘Exploiting the Justice System for Profit’
In a Bloomberg BNA op-ed, ILR President Lisa A. Rickard writes that news of billionaire Peter Thiel’s financing of Hulk Hogan’s Gawker lawsuit has shed light on the troubling third party litigating finance industry.
“Shedding light on litigation financing is a good thing, because when this business is out in the open, it doesn’t look so good,” she writes.
“Lawsuit financiers claim that they are providing a public service with their investments,” Rickard continues. “The reality is that they are exploiting the justice system for profit and changing the very nature of civil litigation.”
