Questions During Sessions Confirmation Hearing “Appeared to Be Inspired” By CFPB Battle

During U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions confirmation hearing to be the next U.S. Attorney General, Senator Ben Sasse (R) asked Sessions questions that “appeared to be inspired, at least in part, by a looming battle between the [Consumer Financial Protection] Bureau and President-elect Donald Trump,” according to the National Law Journal.

Earlier this week, Sasse and Senator Mike Lee (R) sent a letter to Vice President-elect Mike Pence calling for the incoming administration to fire the CFPB director after the inauguration.

During the confirmation hearing, Sasse asked Sessions about “his views on the role of independent agencies in the executive branch,” to which Sessions responded “that is a good question, kind of a historic question at this point in time, because it does appear to me that agencies oftentimes see themselves as independent fiefdoms.”
