Overlawyered Highlights ILR’s Top 10 Most Ridiculous Lawsuits of 2017

The director of the Constitutional Jurisprudence Clinic at the Chapman University Fowler School of Law wrote an op-ed in Law360 saying that a “lawsuit-happy culture” has created a “terrible business climate” in California.

Citing an announcement from a business that is leaving the state and California’s poor showing in ILR’s 2017 “Lawsuit Climate Survey,” Professor Tom Caso said fixing the state’s civil liability system is “a matter of urgency.” He said businesses divert money to “risk assessment and avoidance” rather than “expanding the business, hiring new employees, paying employees a higher salary or giving employees better benefits” because of the state’s liability expanding laws.

Prof. Caso said California voters must “demand that their representatives turn their attention to reforming our civil liability system and getting rid of unnecessary laws.”
