“No Friend-Of-the-Court Senator”

The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse “could start with his own amicus filings” as he introduces a bill that would require groups to disclose members in amicus brief filings to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Sen. Whitehouse introduced a bill that would require associations, think tanks, and other groups to disclose their donors when they submit an amicus brief to the Court. But the Editorial Board points out that he often submitted amicus briefs in support of lawyers and law firms that contribute to his campaigns. For example he has submitted briefs in support of positions of lawyers for the Motley Rice law firm, which the Board says is one of his “largest campaign donors.”
