Maryland Tackling Asbestos Backlog

The Maryland court system is finally working through the more than 35,000 unresolved asbestos lawsuits, Maryland Matters reports.

Cases have been resolved in “much greater numbers” after new procedural changes were implemented in 2017, according to a report from the state court administrator. Those changes put judges and magistrates at status conferences in charge of decisions over which cases can move to trial, rather than plaintiffs’ lawyers. More than half of the cases resolved since the procedural changes took effort were resolved before or at these conferences.
