Louisiana’s Coast Needs Solutions, Not Shakedowns

Louisiana’s Coast Needs Solutions, Not Shakedowns: According to Gifford Briggs, President of the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association, the first proposed settlement in coastal erosion lawsuits brought by Louisiana localities and the state against hundreds of energy producers is deeply flawed. Briggs cites multiple news reports that plaintiffs’ lawyers involved in the $100 million settlement between 12 parishes, the state, and energy producer Freeport McMoRan did not consult with many of the named plaintiffs in the litigation while they negotiated the deal. When asked by media about the details of the settlement, one parish leader succinctly replied “I don’t know nothing.”
