Lawsuits Filed Over Abuse of Painkillers

The New York Times reports that lawsuits have been filed in the City of Chicago and two California counties alleging that drug makers marketed their products “beyond their traditional use…while underplaying the high risk of addiction.”

The Times writes that the lawsuits parallel the “tobacco liability wars of the 1990s” in structure, but have major substantive differences. Former Maine Attorney General James Tierney notes that the drugs in question are highly regulated and beneficial
