Law Firm Hosting Fundraiser For Kentucky AG Who Hired Them

National plaintiffs’ firm Morgan and Morgan will host a fundraiser for Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear, Legal Newsline reports. The firm landed a contract from his office to represent the state in litigation against opioid manufacturers and distributors.

Morgan and Morgan attorneys Mike Morgan, Jonathan Rabinowitz, and Greg Stumbo (who once served as Kentucky House speaker) are co-hosting the event, with tickets costing up to $2,000. In 2017, the firm was awarded a contract, which had no cap on attorneys’ fees, to sue drug companies. However, the General Assembly’s Contract Review Committee recommended nullifying the contract by a bi-partisan 7-1 vote. The state’s Finance Cabinet followed the recommendation and nullified the contract.

Attorney General Beshear sued the General Assembly and the governor over who has the authority to regulate such contracts. An official with the Republican Party of Kentucky equated the fundraiser to corruption.
