Judge Dismisses New York City’s Lawsuit Against Major Energy Companies

A federal judge in New York dismissed a lawsuit filed by New York City against major energy companies over the potential effects of climate change, the New York Times reports.

Though Judge John F. Keenan said climate change “is a fact of life,” he also said the problems it may cause “are not for the judiciary to ameliorate.” He added that using the court to litigate international issues “would severely infringe upon the foreign-policy decisions that are squarely within the purview of the political branches of the U.S. government.”

A similar lawsuit was dismissed last month in California. A federal judge there tossed a suit on behalf of several California cities and counties against the same companies on similar grounds.
