Judge Asks Bizarre Questions at Chevron v. Donziger Appeal

The 22-year-long dispute between Ecuadorian residents and Chevron took a plot twist at yesterday’s federal appeals court hearing.

After hearing arguments challenging a ruling which barred Steven Donziger from seeking to enforce a fraudulently-obtained $8.6 billion judgment against Chevron in the United States, Circuit Judge Richard Wesley, one of the three judges hearing the appeal, unexpectedly asked both parties if they would be agreeable to retrying their original case, from scratch, in a Manhattan court.

It is not clear whether the question was purely hypothetical.
