“Jackpot Junk Science”

The Wall Street Journal editorial board said Bayer is “open for looting” after a California jury awarded $80 million in damages last week in litigation over the company’s Roundup product.

Though the plaintiff alleged the herbicide caused cancer, the board said there is “scientific consensus” that the product is safe. It cited findings from regulators in the United States and Canada that found that it was unlikely to be carcinogenic in humans. The judge overseeing the case excluded these findings in court, which the board says makes it “tough to win on the merits when you can’t present the full story.”

The decision, the board said, is akin to “jackpot justice.”
