Is Illinois a ‘Depot for the Nation’s Lawsuits’?
ILR President Lisa A. Rickard and Illinois Chamber President Todd Maisch published an op-ed in today’s Rockford (IL) Register-Star highlighting Illinois’ poor ranking (48th out of 50) in ILR’s 2015 Lawsuit Climate Survey.
This ranking, they write, “confirms Illinois’ status as a lawsuit haven, and raises new concerns about the long-term impact of that moniker.”
They specifically highlight the problems in Madison County, IL, which has welcomed in recent years an average of 1,500 new asbestos cases annually — while “less than two percent” live in Madison County and “nine in 10 live outside of Illinois altogether.”
“Those in Illinois who hope for a more robust business and jobs environment should strongly and immediately support Gov. Rauner’s efforts to ensure that Illinois remains a crossroads of American commerce, not a depot for the nation’s lawsuits,” concludes their op-ed.
