  • New Study Shows Out-of-State Plaintiffs ‘Flooding’ into CA Courts: A recent study by the Civil Justice Association of California (CJAC) looked at product liability cases against pharmaceutical companies in two cities, Los Angeles and San Francisco, between January 2010 and May 2016. The study found there were nearly 3,000 cases with just over 25,500 plaintiffs. Only 10% of the plaintiffs California residents, and more than 67% of the cases had no California plaintiffs. Shawn M. Griffiths of the Independent Voter Project writes that these cases are “bogging down the judicial system and costing state taxpayers money.” He also cites ILR President Lisa A. Rickard’s recent Washington Post op-ed for evidence of how plaintiffs’ attorneys recruit plaintiffs to these mass tort cases. (Independent Voter Project)
