TCPA Provides “New Income Stream” For Litigious People: The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) “has turned a shoebox full of cheap cell phones into a treasure chest” as plaintiffs across the country look to make money off this outdated federal law. With numerous examples of abusive TCPA suits, including a Polish immigrant who had filed more than 30 TCPA lawsuits had has made approximately $800,000 off his litigation, a three-part series from Legal Newsline/Forbes underscores just how out-of-hand this practice has become. Most recently, a prolific TCPA lawsuit-filer, Todd Friedman, has been accused of racketeering and “legal extortion.” Friedman has filed 390 TCPA lawsuits in Los Angeles federal court, some of which he is the lead plaintiff.
