  • ILR Exposes Lobbying Efforts of Lawsuit Lending Industry: ILR pushed back on the lawsuit lending industry’s claims that it is promoting “self-regulation” legislation in states around the country. “They are running around the country ‘lobbying’ to put a frame of legitimacy on their business,” said Bryan Quigley, ILR senior vice president of communications. “The industry is trying to establish favorable precedent they can take around to other states.” (Reuters)

 

  • False Claims Act Penalties to Double:  According to the U.S. Department of Justice, False Claims Act penalties will soon nearly double. An interim final rule released Wednesday said that minimum per-claim penalties will jump to $10,781 from $5,500, and maximum per-claim penalties will rise to $21,563 from $11,000. (Law360)

 

  • ILR Urges Missouri Legislature to Override Governor’s Veto of Legal Reform Bills: ILR urged the Missouri legislature to override Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s vetoes of bills to adopt the Daubert Standard (SB 591) and to ensure that courts and juries properly consider accurate damage calculations (SB 847). “Governor Nixon’s vetoes of common-sense legal reforms will only help plaintiffs’ lawyers and further worsen the state’s already poor lawsuit climate,” said ILR President Lisa A.
