  • WSJ Against USDA Check-Off Orders: The Wall Street Journal today argues against USDA “check-off orders,” in which, if a certain group is in trouble, “all businesses are compelled to pay a tax that funds a marketing program to promote the crop.” The lumber trade association successfully argued in federal court against such a check-off order. Two years ago the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a similar raisin price-support program (about which we featured in a Faces of Lawsuit Abuse video), ruling that it unconstitutionally requires growers to surrender their crop to the government for future sale.
