The New York Post opines on the federal investigation into the state Supreme Court’s civil division in lower Manhattan. “Its courtrooms handled many of the asbestos and real-estate claims that provided (indicted New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon) Silver with much of his outside income.” (New York Post)
New York Times reporter Eleanor Randolph calls the process to replace indicted New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver “sleazy”, and notes that Assemblyman Carl Heastie may have the votes to win the election. The New York Daily News reports that Heastie’s close friend, college roommate and adviser has has been a “lobbyist for the trial lawyer industry.”
The Wall Street Journal’s Allysia Finley highlights newly-elected Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda to “reinvent Illinois,” which includes a call “curb ‘lawsuit abuse,’ which he says is ‘pushing doctors and health care providers out of the state.’” (Wall Street Journal)
