In the News Today – December 12, 2017

The Palmetto Business Daily published a story on Sen. Lindsey Graham’s efforts to preserve a trial lawyer tax loophole.

South Carolina’s senior senator removed language in the Senate’s tax reform bill that would have closed a loophole that allows West Coast trial lawyers to deduct class action litigation expenses from their taxes. A South Carolina resident wrote a letter to the editor of the Wall Street Journal, also highlighting the issue.

Sen. Graham has received more than $4.1 million from lawyers in his Senate career, which differentiates him from most of his Republican colleagues. The American Association for Justice, a trial lawyer trade association, often contributes to Democratic campaigns. In the 2016 cycle, 96 percent of the group’s contributions went to Democrats.
