U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) is asking the U.S. Justice Department to hold hearings on the proposed Gulf oil spill settlement. He believes “the fines should have been much larger” and wants language forbidding BP from “writing off” any of the settlement for tax purposes. (Tampa Bay Times)

Amid a push from activist investors looking to force changes on some company boards, The Council of Institutional Investors is taking issue with so-called “proxy access” policies they say are too prohibitive. The group plans to release a checklist of “best practices” regarding the policies on Wednesday. (Wall Street Journal)
