- CA Supreme Court Rules in ‘Chairs for Employees’ Case: “Given the potential for massive recoveries of penalties and attorneys’ fees… it is no surprise that seating lawsuits have sprung up against a who’s who of the State’s retailers,” wrote Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. attorneys in an amicus brief for a case over whether employers must offer seats to workers. A California Supreme ruling yesterday in this case will make it “easier for retail and banking employees to bring class-action claims against their employers for not providing them seats while they work.” (Wall Street Journal)
- Judge Approves Oil Spill Settlement: A federal judge yesterday approved the record $20.8 billion settlement between BP and the U.S. Justice Department over the 2010 Gulf oil spill. The settlement includes $5.5 in civil penalties to the Justice Department and $5.9 billion to five Gulf States and hundreds of local governments. (Houston Chronicle)
