How Will California’s Potential Supreme Court Nominees Affect Business?

California Supreme Court Justice Kathryn Werdegar is set to retire at the end of August. Gov. Jerry Brown’s next pick could reshape the Court and have major implications for business, writes Daniel Fisher of Legal Newsline in Forbes.

Brown’s previous picks have resulted in some liability-expanding decisions, but the “good news is Brown is anything but predictable.” During his tenure as governor in 1970, he supported and signed a law that limited medical malpractice awards. This example, Fisher says, “demonstrated a pragmatic streak that may steer him away from nominating a purely pro-plaintiff or pro-labor justice.”

The story points to five specific business-related cases that the new justice will help decide. This will be Brown’s fourth Supreme Court pick.
