FTC Will “Continue To Monitor” Lawyer Advertising Following Warnings

After the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warned several plaintiffs’ law firms and lead generators, an FTC official told Law.com that the agency will continue to “monitor” the issue for new developments.

Richard Cleland, an assistant director at the FTC’s advertising practices division of the consumer protection bureau, said the “issue has been percolating for a while” before the warning letters were sent, and that it remains a focus of the agency. Earlier this year, the FTC warned seven law firms and lead generators that their advertisements were misleading the public about prescription medications by overstating the risks.
