Expert Analysis: Litigation Over Recyclable Claims Is Harmful To Recycling
Recently, several lawsuits have been filed against consumer products companies seeking to add to existing standards for recyclable claims an illogical and unworkable requirement that companies must be able to foresee whether an item will actually be recycled, according to an expert analysis in Law 360.
The article by Katie Bond, a partner at Lathrop GPM, says that this kind of litigation risks discouraging truthful recyclable claims, thereby further clogging and degrading the U.S. system for plastics waste.
“Imposing impossible standards on recyclable claims would serve only to limit recyclable claims, and send more questionable plastics into waste streams, at a time when companies and consumers are looking to be a part of the plastics solution.”
