Debate Continues Over Madison County, IL’s ‘High Litigation Rates’

“Is Madison County court a litigation nightmare?” asks an Alton Telegraph story, which points to a new Illinois Civil Justice League (ICJL) study that shows the high per-capita rate of lawsuits filed in the county.

“Madison County has 8.255 litigation claims for every 1,000 residents. This compares to 3.666 in Cook County, which has the second-highest number,” notes the editorial. “The majority of those are asbestos-related mesothelioma cases.”

“It’s a culture we’ve created here,” said ICJL President John Pastuovic. “It’s like that movie said, ‘If you build it, they will come.’ If you build a plaintiff-friendly docket for asbestos cases, you have out-of-state law firms with offices in Madison County. It’s a snowball effect.”
