Customs Laws Could Be Next False Claims Act Front

A class action settlement will force Bumble Bee Foods to change the wording on its canned salmon product while giving no money to class members, Law360 reports.

A class action was filed in December over the packaging when a customer said the “smoked” label was deceiving. As part of the settlement, the company will change the wording from “smoked” to “smoke-flavored.” In addition to changing the wording of the package, Bumble Bee will also pay up to $85,000 for fees. Class members will not get a monetary benefit from the settlement.

ILR research has documented the growth of class action food litigation. That report notes that lawyers are the biggest beneficiaries of food lawsuits, while class members are often left with little to no benefit.
