WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 5, 2003 – The United States Chamber of Commerce announced it has created a new position – executive vice president and chief legal officer – and has tapped Stanton D. Anderson to lead the Chamber’s efforts on legal reform and defense of business interests in the courts.

As executive vice president and CLO, Anderson will oversee the National Chamber Litigation Center – the public-policy legal arm of the U.S. Chamber; the Institute for Legal Reform – a Chamber affiliate dedicated to restoring fairness, efficiency and consistency to the U.S. civil justice system; and the Office of General Counsel.

Anderson has been involved with Chamber efforts as an outside counselor for a number of years, including serving as a founding member of the Chamber’s Center for International Private Enterprise – an organization that fosters democracy and market economies around the world. Anderson has been an advisor to the Institute for Legal Reform on special legislative and litigation projects. He will remain as a partner in the D.C. law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery.

“Stan is a top-notch lawyer with an international reputation. He is also a skilled political analyst and a proven leader,” said Thomas Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. “He will serve on the Chamber Management Committee where his advice on legal, business and international matters will be invaluable.

“It is critical that the Chamber build on its early victories in tort reform,” said Donohue. “We will continue to defend the interests of the business community in the courts, while informing voters of the important issues at stake in state Supreme Court and attorney general races. Stan combines the legal insight and political know-how to help make a difference in those efforts.”

Anderson has been involved in national political affairs since 1972, when he served in the White House as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations under Henry Kissinger. He has been involved in managing a number of Republican conventions and served as counsel to the Reagan-Bush Campaign in 1980. Anderson is the chairman of the board of Global USA, Inc., and serves on the board of a number of private companies, including the board of advisors to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He received his juris doctorate from Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
