Canadian Judge Orders Tobacco Companies to Pay $15 Billion in Damages
Three tobacco companies — Imperial Tobacco, Rothmans Benson & Hedges, and JTI-MacDonald — have been ordered to pay $15 billion in damages in a lawsuit “touted as the biggest civil case in Canadian history.”
This announcement comes a few months after ILR released a paper, “Painting an Unsettling Landscape: Canadian Class Actions 2011-2014,” which found a significant uptick in the number of class actions being filed in Canada.
