California Judge Says Coffee Must Now Have Warning Labels

A Los Angeles judge said coffee must now be served with a cancer warning label because of a substance naturally produced in the roasting process, the Associated Press reports.

The lawsuit was brought under Prop. 65, a California law that, the article says, “allows private citizens, advocacy groups and attorneys to sue on behalf of the state and collect a portion of civil penalties.” According to the Wall Street Journal, attorneys’ fees and costs made up 75 percent of the total amount of settlement money won under the law in 2017.

The National Coffee Association’s statement said the “U.S. government’s own Dietary Guidelines state that coffee can be part of a healthy lifestyle.” Earlier this year, the former head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration told the Wall Street Journal that coffee has known health benefits, and that warning labels could make people get caffeine from less safe sources like soda or caffeine shots.
