Benczkowski Confirmation Signals DOJ’s Continued Movement Towards “Fairness and the Rule of Law”

Though all eyes are on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation process, Wednesday’s confirmation of Brian Benczkowski as the new assistant attorney general of the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) criminal division is “a big deal in its own right,” according to an op-ed in the Washington Examiner.

Robert Bork writes that Benczkowski will bring to the DOJ “energetic leadership” that will “change how the government relates to corporations and the private sector.” Enforcement “embarrassments” under previous administrations, Bork says, have made the DOJ reassess its “draconian” enforcement practices, which has led to significant policy changes that have “embraced a spirit in which compliance is becoming more of a cooperative venture with the private sector.”

Bork says Benczkowski’s confirmation will provide the DOJ with a “strong leader who is expected to aggressively fulfill the department’s new” compliance-based agenda. Benczkowski, Bork says, is a “tough, no-nonsense law enforcer who has pledged his commitment” to “fairness and the rule of law.”
